Historical Backgrounds
to Bible People is a valuable tool to help one study characters
who had some bearing on the biblical record. Dr. Lewis discusses sixty-three
persons who are identifiable with some specific biblical character.
He compiles and summarizes for convenient usage the historical and
archaeological evidence which is available
about these characters, information both in and out of the Bible. In the process Lewis summarizes a century and a
half of research and analysis, plus the context in which any historical or
archaeological evidence arises.
Though
this book is not a history of the Near East, it is an excellent summary of the context of Near Eastern history. It
provides authoritative guidance for the student.
This
volume was first released in 1971 under the title Historical Backgrounds of Bible History. The
fourth printing in 1981 was retitled, Archaeological Backgrounds to Bible People. With this printing, a
portion of the original title is being
restored, making the latest title: Historical Backgrounds of Bible People.
